春は潮干狩りのシーズンだと言われています。
潮干狩りとは、潮が引いた時に浜辺であさりやはまぐりなどの貝をとることです。万葉集という、日本で一番古い詩集にも潮干狩りの事が書かれていたそうなので、とても古いときから潮干狩りの文化があるそうです。
Spring is known as the season for shiohigari, or shell gathering.
Shiohigari means going out on the beach at low tide to collect shellfish known as asari and hamaguri (clams). Japan’s oldest collection of poems, Man’yōshū, also contains references to shiohigari, so it is a very ancient part of Japanese culture.

貝を見つけるためには、潮が引いている時に海水で濡れているくらいの海に近い砂浜に行って、穴を探します。小さな穴が空いている所に貝が潜っているので、そこを掘って貝をとります。
To find these shellfish, you go out onto the beach when the tide is out and search for holes in the wet sand. These shellfish dig small holes in the sand, so you dig them up and collect the clams.

私は子供の頃に家族で潮干狩りをした記憶がありますが、子供の頃だったのであまり覚えていません。早朝に起きてでかけて眠かったように思います。とれたての貝はおいしかったでしょうが、覚えていないので残念です。
When I was a kid I remember doing shiohigari with my family, but since it was so long ago I don’t remember the details. I woke up and went out early in the morning and I remember being tired. The freshly caught clams were probably delicious, but unfortunately I don’t remember that part.
