ParticipantI found some casual grammar I didn’t understand in the Kanzen Master book:
男:あの、これ、使わせてもらいたいんだけど。
女:A ごめん。これ、友達のなんだ。
B あ、じゃ、使ってみるね。It seems like the answer is B to me, but it’s A. They don’t give any context.

The man is asking to use the product. “Can I use this?” or, “Please let me use this.” You can refer to Chapater 22-1. if the man says, “これ、使ってもらいたいんだけど (I want you to use this),” the answer should be B. But the man says, “使わせてもらいたいです.” That means he wants to use it.

ParticipantI don’t understand the answer. I thought B meant “Oh, let me try it” (to see if it works). I am thinking he is at a store and wants to test a product. I don’t know what B means in that context.

KeymasterIf this was in a store, the woman would need to use humble form like, 動作確認いたします. The man is using a somewhat polite form and the woman is using casual form, so I assume they are not very close friends, and the situation is something like classmates or coworkers.
Let’s assume they are classmates and the man wants to borrow the woman’s tablet. We can translate the sentences as:
Man: Excuse me, I would like to try this…
Woman: A. Sorry, this is my friend’s.
B. Oh, then I’ll give it a try. -

ParticipantOh, that makes sense. This is part of the listening section that I have trouble with. It is just short conversations like this but every one is a different context.

KeymasterI’m glad that the explanation helped you. I think it’s difficult to answer this question without knowing the situation and relationship between the man and the woman.

ParticipantThere are always some extra hard questions. Because it’s a pass/fail test, they don’t expect anyone to get a perfect score. But you can never know which ones you got wrong or what the right answer was on the actual test so these books are really good.

KeymasterYes, they like to trick people with extra hard questions. It would be nice if they provided better context clues.

ParticipantI don’t think it’s unfair, but it’s not a very realistic situation. It’s just a test taking skill. It’s difficult to figure it out and then stop thinking about it immediately, the next question will be a totally different situation. Most of the test has context clues, it’s just the one section is like this. I’m getting better at it.
