今年はラニーニャ現象のために1月には大雪になると言われていたのですが、去年ほどの大雪にはなりませんでした。今年の雪は、普段は降らないような所での大雪だったようです。
This year, due to the la Niña effect, we were told that January would be extremely snowy. However, it wasn’t as snowy as last year. Instead, this year’s snow fell heavily on places that normally don’t get a lot of snow.

雪が降ると、雪かきをしたり屋根の雪を下ろしたり、運転が大変になったりして、大人はあまりうれしくないのですが、子供にとっては雪は楽しいものです。雪が降ったときにつくるものの一つに、「かまくら」があります。これは、大きな雪のかたまりに穴をあけて部屋を造ったもので、その中に入って遊んだりします。
When it snows, adults are not so happy because of shoveling snow, knocking snow off of the roofs, and because driving becomes difficult. Kids, on the other hand, are usually happy about snow. When it snows, one of the things kids like to build is a kamakura. A kamakura is a big pile of snow with a hole dug in it to form a hole. Kids climb inside and play.

かまくらの中は意外に温かかったりして、しばらく座っていても寒くなかった記憶があります。秋田ではかまくらをたくさん作って、中に毛布を引いてそこで餅を食べたりコンロで甘酒を温めてのんだりする行事があるそうです。横手市では、かまくらのなかに祭壇を作って、水神を祀ったりもするそうです。
The inside of a kamakura is warmer than the outside, and I remember sitting in one for a long time and still not feeling cold. In Akita Prefecture, they build lots of kamakura and place blankets inside them, then place stoves inside and heat up mochi and amazake to enjoy. I’ve heard that in Yokote City, they set up altars inside of kamakura to honor the water gods.

一つ一つのかまくらから暖かい光が出ていて、とても幻想的な景色だそうです。機会があれば一度見てみたいなと思います。
Each kamakura glows with the lights put inside, and it creates a fantastic spectacle. I’d love to have the chance to see that one day.
