      Hello everyone.
It’s September, so it’s getting cooler outside. In September, you can see autumn trees and flowers, and you can feel autumn. 金木犀 (きんもくせい: Osmanthus fragrans) and 彼岸花 (ひがんばな: Lycoris radiata) are famous autumn flowers and trees. Osmanthus fragrans has a nice scent. You can smell it in a lot of places. Lycoris radiata is a beautiful red flower. It blooms in the Higan season, so it’s called “higan-bana.” When I was a child, I was afraid of this flower due to its appearance, but now I think it’s very beautiful.

September is Higan season, so I’ll introduce you Higan this month.

The name Higan is from Buddhism. The world where living people are is called Shigan, and it is full of worldly desires, agony, greed, and such. Higan is also called Gokuraku-jyodo or heaven. Gokuraku-jyodo is a sacred place where you go after you have overcome your worldly desires, agony, greed, and have become enlightened.
In September, the equinox occurs. The day is called Shubun-no-hi in Japan. On that day, the sun goes down due west, so people believe that Shigan is closest to Higan on that day. People pray for their ancestors, and to go to Gokuraku-jyodo someday.
Higan starts 3 days before Shubun-no-hi and lasts until 3 days after Shubun-no-hi. People clean their family Buddhist altars and visit their ancestors’ graveyards during this period.

Did you image search the flower? I don’t think I saw the flower in NJ or Philly, but the flower is everywhere in Japan. The color is very beautiful.

        Thanks 🙂

I totally forgot about those flowers and trees while I was in the US because I didn’t see them there. When I saw and smell the flowers this year, I felt that “this is smell/ color of autumn in Japan.”  I’m glad that I was able to share the feeling with you.
