もう12月ですね。クリスマスが終わると、あっという間に年末になります。みなさんの国では年末と正月の休みは何日くらいありますか？日本では大体12月29日から1月3日までの休みが一般的です。大体一週間ぐらいですね。
It’s December already. Time flies very quickly after Christmas. How long is your country’s holiday season around the new year? In Japan, it generally starts on December 29th and lasts through January 3rd. So it’s about one week.

　さて、日本では年末に行う行事が色々あります。その中の一つが「お歳暮(せいぼ)」です。お歳暮というのは、お世話になった人に1年間の御礼の気持ちをこめてギフトを送る習慣です。昔は会社の上司や仕事でお世話になった人などに送っていましたが、最近では親族や親しい友人などに送ることもあるそうです。
There are a lot of things to do before the end of the year in Japan. Oseibo is one of them. Oseibo is the custom of sending gifts to people whom you want to thank. This tradition used to be a work-related event, but nowadays people send oseibo to relatives and close friends too.

　お歳暮を贈る時期は大体12月13日から20日くらいまでに送った方がいいと言われています。あまり遅くなると、年末の忙しい時期にお返しを考えなくてはいけないので迷惑になる可能性があります。
おそくなってしまった場合は、「お年賀」という名前でギフトを送った方が良いそうです。「お年賀」は松の内(まつのうち)が終わる時期までに送った方がいいです。松の内というのは、門松(かどまつ)おなどの正月の飾りを飾っておく時期です。これは関東地方では1月7日で、関西地方では1月15日と言われています。
The time to send oseibo is between December 13th and 20th. If you are not able to send it within thT time period, it can be troublesome for the receiver because they have to think about a return gift during the busy holiday season. For that reason, it’s common to call the gift onenga instead of oseibo. Onenga means “happy new year.” You can send onenga gifts from the end of the year to the end of Matsunouchi. Matsunouchi is the final day in which your house is decorated with new year decorations (such as kadomatsu). Matsunouchi differs from region to region. In the Kanto area its January 7th. In the Kansai area it’s the 15th.

　お歳暮で送る物は、ハムやソーセージなどのセットや、お菓子の詰め合わせ(つめあわせ)、ビールのセットや日本酒などです。大体3000円～5000円くらいの物が普通です。
Common things to give for oseibo are gift sets of preserved ham and sausage, cookies, beer, sake, etc. The common price range is 3,000yen to 5,000yen.
