お正月の楽しみの一つと言えば、福袋を買う事です。
One of the fun parts of New Year’s is buying fukubukuro (lucky bags).

福袋は色々な商品が入っている、中身が見えない袋の事で、通常は金額よりも得をする内容になっています。
Fukubukuro are sealed bags containing various items, and their contents are usually worth more than the price paid.

ショッピングモールやオンラインストアなどで、新年始まってオープンした時に売り始めます。
Shopping malls and online stores start selling them when they open for the new year.

1月1日のお正月にオープンする店もあれば、3日くらいからオープンする店もあり、それぞれ特徴がある福袋を売っています。例えば、パソコンパーツ専門の店だったら、ちょっと高いパーツが入っている事もありますし、お茶の専門店では、普段買えないような高級な珍しいお茶が袋に入っている事もあります。
Some stores open on January 1st, while others open around the 3rd, each selling fukubukuro with their own characteristics. For example, a store specializing in computer parts might include slightly higher-end components, while a specialty tea shop might pack the bag with premium, rare teas you wouldn’t normally buy.

都会ではお店のオープン前から行列を作って福袋を買う人の姿も見られます。並びたくない人のために、福袋の予約ができる所もありますから、最近は色々な福袋の買い方があるなぁと思います。
In cities, you can see people lining up before stores even open to buy fukubukuro. For those who don’t want to wait in line, some places offer fukubukuro reservations, so these days I think there are all sorts of ways to buy them.

今年の冬は少し変な天気があって、寒い日と暖かい日が交互にありました。暖かい日はなんと２０度以上の気温になりました。１２月にこんなに暖かくなるのはとても珍しいです。暖かい日はあっても、やっぱり冬ですから冬の行事は行われます。
This winter had some unusual weather, with cold days alternating with warm ones. On the warm days, temperatures actually rose above 20 degrees Celsius. It’s very rare for December to be this warm. Even with warm days, it’s still winter, so winter events take place.

冬になると山でスキーやスノーボードなどのウインタースポーツが行われるようになりますので、その前に安全を祈願して、山の神様にお祈りをする神事が行われます。
When winter arrives, winter sports like skiing and snowboarding begin in the mountains. Before that, a ritual is held to pray for safety, offering prayers to the mountain deities.

神社の神主さんが山に来て、セレモニーを行います。一般に公開されてやる事もありますし、スキー場関係者だけが集まってやることもあります。
A shrine priest comes to the mountain to perform the ceremony. Generally it’s open to the public, but sometimes it’s just for the ski resort staff.

そういうニュースがあると、冬が始まるなぁという気持ちになります。
Hearing news like this makes me feel like winter is truly beginning.

１１月になると、お酒屋さんやスーパーで「ボジョレーヌーヴォー予約受付中！」というチラシをよく見るようになります。日本でもワインはとても人気で、特にボジョレーヌーヴォーは人々は予約をしたり、売り切れる前にすぐに買いに行くそうです。
When November comes, we often see flyers saying, “Now accepting reservations for beaujolais nouveau!” at liquor stores and supermarkets. Wine is very popular in Japan, and beaujolais nouveau is especially popular, with people putting in reservations and going to buy it quickly before it is sold out.

毎年１１月の第３木曜日に発売が開始されますが、これはフランスのワイン法によって決められているそうです。
It hoes on sale on the third Thursday in November, according to a decision by French law.
日本はフランスよりも８時間ほど時差がありますから、フランスよりも先にボジョレーヌーヴォーが飲めるのです。
Japan has a 8 hour time difference from France, so you can drink beaujolais nouveau here sooner than in France.

今年のボジョレーヌーヴォーは１１月２０日に解禁されました。今年のボジョレーヌーヴォーはフルーティーな香りが特徴な良いワインだとニュースで言っていました。ワイン好きの人にとっては楽しみなイベントですね。
Open season for beaujolais nouveau started this year on November 20th. The news has said that this year’s beaujolais nouveau has a fruity aroma that is especially distinct. It must be a fun season for wine lovers!

10月1日は衣替えの日です。昔から10月に入ると涼しくなってきますので、一般的に10月は春や夏用の服を片付けて、秋・冬用の洋服を出します。私が学生時代の時は、10月1日から学生服を交換する習慣がありましたから、10月になると、皆が服を長袖長ズボンにするのが普通でした。
October 1st is the day for koromogae. Since it has always begun to grow cold once October arrives, people generally pack up their spring and summer clothes and take out their fall and winter clothes. During my school years, there was a custom of changing out our school uniforms on October 1st, and it was normal for everyone to wear long sleeves and pants starting in October.

しかし最近は10月に入ってもまだ夏のように暑いですから、衣替えをするタイミングも遅くなっていますね。10月後半くらいから、北の方に住む人から徐々に皆さん衣替えをしていくのだと思います。
However, these days even in October it can be still as hot as summer, so the timing to do koromogae is growing later. I think around the second half of October, starting with the people living in northern areas, everyone will begin to gradually swap out their clothes.

もう10月の最後の週ですが、最近は暑いと感じる日と寒いなと思う日がありますから、なかなか衣替えができません。きっと11月ぐらいまで、夏服と秋服を混ぜて着ますから、なかなか夏服が片付けられなくなりますね。
It’s now the final week of October, and lately there are hot days and cold days, so it’s difficult to completely change out our clothes. Surely even in November we will be mixing summer and fall clothing, so it will be difficult to pack our summer clothes away.

9月の第3月曜日は敬老の日です。
The third Monday of September is Respect for the Aged Day.
敬老の日は、長い間社会のために頑張ってきた老人に感謝して、長く生きる事を祝う日として決められています。この敬老の日と秋分の日をつなげて長い連休になると、シルバーウィークと呼ばれます。
Respect for the Aged Day is a day for showing gratitude towards those who worked hard for a long time for the sake of society, and to celebrate their long lives. When Respect for the Aged Day and the Fall Equinox line up, we get a long holiday called Silver Week.

敬老の日に特に大きなイベントが行われるという事はないのですが、9月は一般的に気温が下がってきて気持ちの良い日が続くのでたくさんの人は出かけてBBQをしたりピクニックをしたりします。家族にお年寄りがいる場合はお年寄りに花やプレゼントを贈ることもあります。
Respect for the Aged Day does not have any big events or anything, but September in general has cooler weather and lots of pleasant days, so many people go out and have barbecues or picnics. Families with elderly members usually give them flowers or presents as well.

毎年８月１１日は山の日という祝日です。山で楽しい事をしたり、山に感謝したりするための日です。８月１１日はお盆の時期と近いので、お盆と合わせて長い連休になる年もあります。
This year, the holiday called Mountain Day fell on August 11. This day is for doing fun things in the mountains, and expressing our gratitude to the mountains. August 11th is close to the Obon season, so in some years the days are grouped together into a long holiday.

毎年、山の日にはどこかで山の大会が行われますが、今年は福井県で行われました。福井県内の色々な山で山登りのイベントがおこなれたり、山の近くにある観光地でイベントが行われました。
Every year on Mountain Day there are big gatherings in the mountains, and this year one took place in Fukui Prefecture. Several mountains in Fukui Prefecture had mountain climbing events, and tourist locations near the mountains also held events.

８月はとても暑い時期ですが、山に登ると涼しい気持ちになるので、山登りはとても人気があるアクティビティーです。
August is a very hot season, but climbing mountains allows us to feel cool temperatures, and so mountain climbing is a very popular activity.

夏の食べ物の代表の一つがそうめんですね。７月には夏休みも始まりますし、家で食事を食べることも多くなります。外は暑いですから、家では簡単で、さっぱりした食べ物を食べたいですね。
One of the big summer foods is sōmen. Summer vacation starts in July, and people eat more meals at home. Since summer is hot, people want to eat easy, refreshing foods at home.

そんな時によく食べるのがそうめんです。そうめんはうどんよりも細くて、たいていは冷たくして食べますから夏に食べやすいです。
In these cases, sōmen is a popular choice. Sōmen is thinner than udon, and usually it is eaten cold, so it’s a good meal for summer.

日本では各地で色々なそうめんが作られています。有名な産地は奈良県、小豆島、兵庫県、長崎県などです。各地では気候も違いますし、材料も少し違いますから味も違います。その他の産地では太さや色が違うそうめんも有ります。夏の暑い時には色々なそうめんが食べたくなりますね。
Different types of sōmen are made across every part of Japan. Nara Prefecture, Shōdoshima, and Hyōgo Prefecture, are some of the more famous regions for sōmen. Each region has a different climate, and the ingredients differ a little, so the flavors also differ. In other regions, sōmen of different thickness and colors are also famous. In the heat of summer, we want to eat all different kinds of sōmen!

６月は梅雨でジメジメする季節ですが、この時期になるといい事もあります。メロンが収穫できる時期です。本州の方ではだいたい５月から６月がメロンの旬で、北海道ではもう少し遅い、６月から８月が旬になります。北海道のメロンと言えば、夕張地方でとれる夕張メロンが有名です。オレンジ色でジューシーでとても美味しいです。
June is the month of tsuyu, a humid, wet season, but there are also good things about this time. It’s the time when melons are harvested. On the island of Honshū, May and June are when melons are in season, while on Hokkaido it’s a bit later — June through August. A famous Hokkaido melon is the yubari melon from the Yubari region. They are orange, juicy, and very delicious.

日本でメロンを一番沢山作っている場所は茨城県です。色々な種類のメロンをつくっていて、全国に発送しています。メロンの農園でメロン狩り体験などもできるので、メロンが好きな人は是非やってみるといいでしょう。
Ibaraki is the prefecture which produces the most melons in Japan. There are several varieties of melon, and they are shipped all over the country. You can visit melon farms and try melon picking. People who like melons should definitely try it out!

今年の5月23日から25日は、平泉寺白山神社で、33年に一度の御開帳がありました。江戸時代から続いている風習で、33年おきに白山神社の御神体の河上御前が御開帳（神社の扉が開いて一般の人が見ることができるようになること）されます。この行事は江戸時代から続いていて、33年おきに、明治時代、大正時代、昭和時代、平成時代に一回ずつ御開帳されて、今年で7回目です。
This year on May 23 through 25, a once-in-33-years unveiling took place at Heisenji Hakusan Shrine. This custom has continued since the Edo period, and every 33 years the goddess Kawakami Gozen who is worshiped at Hakusan Shrine has been unveiled (the doors to the shrine are opened so that ordinary people can view the god). This has continued since the Edo period, happening once each during the Meiji, Taisho, Showa, and Heisei eras. This year is the 7th time this event has taken place.

23日は本当にたくさんの人々が集まって、御神体を拝みに行ったそうです。翌日の24日には僧兵行列が行われました。中世には8000人の僧兵が平泉寺に住んでいましたので、その当時の風景の再現として企画されました。今回は80人くらいの人が参加して、僧兵の姿で行列を作りました。
その行列を見るために2日目もたくさんの人が集まったそうです。
On the 23rd, a truly large number of people gathered to pray to the enshrined goddess. The following day, on the 24th, there was a sohei (warrior-monk) parade. In the middle ages, 8000 warrior monks lived at Heisenji, and this was arranged to recreate the appearance of that time. This time about 80 people participated in the parade, wearing sohei costumes.
A large number of people gathered on the second day as well in order to watch that parade.

33年に一度ですから、次に開催されるのはまた33年後です。興味があったら、33年後に是非訪れてみてください。
This only happens once every 33 years, so the next time will be 33 years from now. If you’re interested, definitely come and visit in 33 years! 

今年の４月には福井県と滋賀県、山形県でディズニーのパレードが行われました。
During April this year, there was a Disney Parade in Fukui, Shiga, and Yamagata Prefectures.

福井にディズニーのパレードが来るのは８年ぶりで、福井の駅前でいくつかのキャラクターが車に乗ってパレードをしました。ディズニーのパレードは日本ではとても人気で、毎回沢山の人が集まります。
It has been 8 years since the Disney Parade came to Fukui, and several characters appeared on a parade float in the Fukui station area. The Disney Parade is very popular in Japan, and every time lots of people gather to see it.

今年の４月６日は福井駅でパレードが行われて、８万人の人が集まったそうです。パレードがある日は他の県からも人が集まるので、大変混雑します。東京のディズニーランドは遠いのでなかなか行く機会がないですが、地方にパレードに来てくれると見に行く事ができますから良いですね。
The parade took place on April 6 at Fukui station, and they say 80,000 people attended. On the parade day, people came from other prefectures, so it was very crowded. Tokyo Disney Land is far away, so people don’t often have the chance to go there, but it’s good that when the parade comes to other regions, locals can finally get to see this event.
