８月４日は箸の日です。８は「はち」ですから、「は」とも呼ぶことがあります。そして４は「よん」か「し」と読みますので、「はし」とも読めます。ですから、８月４日は「はしのひ」になりました。１９７５年からそのように決められたようです。国が決めた記念日ではありませんので、休日ではありませんが、箸の産地ではその日に行事を行ったりします。
August 4th is Chopsticks Day. Because 8 is “hachi,” it is sometimes pronounced as “ha.” And 4 is “yon” or “shi,” so putting 8 and 4 together they are read as “hashi.” Thus, 8/4 became “hashi no hi” (Chopsticks Day). This was decided back in 1975. It’s not a national holiday, so nobody has the day off, but in regions that produce chopsticks events and such are held.

島根県では、使われなくなったお箸の焚き上げ行事が行われます。人々が使い終わた古い箸や使えなくなった箸を神社に持って行って、集まった箸を神主さんがお祈りして燃やします。長い間使われてきた箸に感謝をする行事です。また、８月４日に箸の使い方や箸のマナーについての講習をしたりする事もあります。
In Shimane Prefecture, there is a bonfire ritual for burning old, unused chopsticks. People bring their old and unused chopsticks to a shrine, and the priest offers a prayer and then burns them. It’s a ritual to offer thanks to the chopsticks which we have used for such a long time. In addition, on August 4th, there are events for practicing how to use chopsticks and the manners that go along with them.

一年に一回、いつも使う道具について考えることは良い事ですね。
