冬になると始まる行事や、冬になるとおいしくなる食べ物などいろいろあります。たとえば蟹です。蟹のシーズンは冬です。１１月くらいになると、蟹の解禁の話題がニュースになります。
There are all sorts of events and foods to enjoy once winter comes. For example, crabs. Winter is crab season. Around November, the news starts talking about the opening of crab season.

蟹の解禁日とは、蟹の漁を始めても良いという日です。蟹の量が減りすぎないように、保護のために蟹の漁ができる時期は決められています。今シーズンの蟹の解禁日は１１月６日でした。
Crab season’s opening day is the day it becomes OK to fish for crabs. In order to protect crabs and make sure their numbers don’t get too low, crabbing is limited to a specific period of time. This year’s crab season opened on November 6th.

蟹の漁はメスの蟹の漁から始まって、後半はオスガニの漁になります。今シーズンの漁が終わる日は３月２０日です。蟹がとれる地域では、温泉宿やホテルなどでカニ料理を食べることができます。
Crabbing season begins with catching female crabs, and in the latter half male crabs are caught. This crab season will end on March 20. In crabbing areas, you can eat crabs at onsen hotels and so forth.

蟹を食べることについて面白い表現があります。静かにさせたい相手がいたら、蟹を食べさせればいいというような表現です。蟹を食べるときはなぜかみんな真剣になって、静かに殻から身を出して黙々と食べるのです。おもしろいですね。あなたのまわりに、おしゃべりをしすぎてうるさい人がいたら、是非蟹を御馳走してみてはいかがでしょうか。
There are some interesting phrases relating to eating crabs. For instance, if you want to make someone shut up, you should feed them crabs. For some reason, everyone becomes very quiet and focused as they remove the meat from the shells, and they eat it silently. Isn’t that funny? If there is someone around you who talks too much, how about treating them to a feast of crabs?

１１月は「じゅういち」と読みますが、数字は「いち」と「いち」です。この「いち」の「い」が並ぶので、「いい(良い)」と言ったりします。例えば、１１月２９日は、「良い肉」の日だそうです。「２９」は「に」と「く」ですから、合わせて「にく(肉)」ですね。
“Eleven” is pronounced “jūichi,” but it is made up of two ones. Since “one” can be pronounced “i,” two ones can be read as “ii,” which means “good.” For example, 11/29 can be read as “ii niku,” with the two and nine in twenty-nine read as “ni” and “ku.” Thus 11/29 can be called “good meat” day.

２０２２年の「良い肉」の日は、ハンバーガー屋さんなどで「肉の日」キャンペーンをしていました。「肉の日」にちなんで２９０円値引きされたり、パテがいつもよりもたくさん入っていたりしました。その他にも、ステーキ屋さんなどで値引きや食べ放題プランなどもやっていました。
On this year’s “good meat” day, hamburger restaurants are having sales. Since it’s the 29th, some offer discounts of 290 yen, or they serve patties that are larger than normal. Also, steak restaurants and so on are giving discounts or all-you-can-eat plans.

スーパーでも肉の安売りがされています。面白いですね。１１月はその他にも「良い○○の日」が毎日ありますから、面白い月ですよ。
Supermarkets are also having sales on meat. It’s interesting. Since every day in November starts with 11, there are lots of “good _____” days, making it a fun month.

田んぼで稲の収穫をした後に出る稲わらをつかって、大きなアート作品を作って外に展示するイベントが毎年行われています。稲作が終わる８月末から１０月末くらいまで展示されているそうです。
There is an annual event in which large artworks are made and displayed outdoors using the straw that comes out of the rice fields after the harvest is over. They are displayed between August, when the rice is harvested, and October.

毎年秋になるとわらアートの写真や祭りの様子が見られるので、毎年楽しみです。
大きなものでは、ゴリラやトリケラトプスなどもあって、迫力があります。
Every year in the fall you can enjoy these festivals and straw art photographs. That includes large sculptures of gorillas and triceratops. It’s impressive!

新潟県で行われている祭りが大きいようですが、仙台市や山口、浜松などでも行われているようです。長い期間展示がされているので、いつか見にいてみたいですね 。
The festival in Niigata is large, and there are also festivals in Sendai, Yamaguchi, Hamamatsu, and so on. They are displayed for a long time, so I’d like to visit and see them some day.

岸和田だんじり祭は、大阪府の岸和田市で毎年９月に行われる祭りです。とても有名な祭りですから、岸和田市に行った事がなくても名前を知っている人はたくさんいると思います。
The Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri takes place in September, in Kishiwada, Osaka. It’s a very famous festival, so many people who have never even been to Kishiwada know of it.

今年は９月１７日と１８日に開催されました。この祭りで有名なのは何といっても「だんじり」という大きな神輿の車を引く様子です。だんじりの重さは約4トンで、それを大勢の人が速いスピードで町の中を走りながら引っ張っていきます。速い速度のまま曲道を曲がったりする事を「やりまわし」と言い、初めてテレビで見たときはすごく危なそうだったのでびっくりしました。
This year it took place on the 17th and 18th of September. The most well-known feature of this festival are the “danjiri,” the large mikoshi carts which are pulled through the streets. Each danjiri weighs about 4 tons, and is pulled by a group of people running at high speeds through the streets. The maintain their high speeds even when they turn corners, which is called “yarimawashi.” The first time I saw this on television I was surprised by how dangerous it looked.

だんじりの上には指示を出したりだんじりをコントロールしたりします。すごく大勢の人が衣裳を着て勢いよくだんじりを引く姿はとても格好良いです。だんじりは欅の木でできていて、すばらしい彫刻で飾られています。
Each danjiri is guided by people on top who give directions. The large groups of people pulling the danjiri look very cool in their identical uniforms. The danjiri are made from zelkova trees and covered in ornate carvings.

見物する人がたくさんいるのでとても混んでいる様子ですが、いつか実際に見てみたいですね。
Many people go to see this festival, so it gets very crowded, but I’d like to go and see it with my own eyes some day.

一年間の間に、春・夏・秋・冬の４つの季節の変わり目があります。この、季節の変わり目の前の１８日間を土用といいます。干支の１２支は昔は日付を数えるときに使われていました。そのため、１２日周期で丑の日がきます。１８日間の土用の間に、丑の日は1回から2回来ることになります。
The four seasons of the year each have a set day when the season changes. The last 18 days before this set date are called “doyō.” Long ago, the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac were used to tell the dates. Thus, once every twelve days is a “day of the ox.” During the 18 day doyō period, there will be either one or two days of the ox.

土用の丑の日は１年間に何回もありますが、有名なのは夏の土用の丑の日です。この時期には暑くて体調を壊す人が多いので、栄養があって体に良い食べ物を食べる習慣がありました。うしの日ですから、「う」のつく食べ物が良いという事で、「うめぼし」や「うどん」、「うり」などが食べられたそうです。
Each year contains several doyō periods, with several days of the ox in them, but the most famous is the day of the ox which falls in the summer doyō. This period is so hot and there are many people who feel weak during this time, so it’s a custom to eat nutritious foods to support your body during these days. Because ushi (ox) starts with ‘u,’ it is thought to be good to eat foods that start with ‘u,’ such as umeboshi, udon, uri, etc. on these days.

今年は春も少し寒かったですし、５月も涼しい日が多かったんですが、さすがに６月になると梅雨に入ってジメジメして、暑い日が多くなりました。最近、東北の新潟県で37℃まで気温が上がったそうです！その他の地方でも、35～36℃のところもあって、すごく暑いです。
This year, spring was a bit cold, and there were many cool days even in May. But as expected, the rainy season started in June and there were many hot and muggy days. Recently, Niigata Prefecture in the Tohoku area even reached 37 degrees Celsius! Other areas were also very hot, reaching 35-36 degrees Celsius.

アメリカのフロリダ州も暑くて有名ですが、あそこでは雨が降った後に涼しい風が吹いて気持ちよかったのを思い出します。日本では雨が降っても涼しくならずに、湿度がもっと高くなって気持ち悪いです。
In the US, Florida is well known for being hot, but after it rains there it becomes cool and the wind blows, and I remember it feeling very nice. In Japan, after it rains it does not get any cooloer, but it just gets even more humid and uncomfortable.

関東エリアもすごく暑い日が続いていますが、最近のニュースで電力が足りなくて大変だと言われていました。３月２２日には電力需給ひっ迫警報という警報まで出て心配しました。政府は関東や東北の皆さんに「節電してください」とお願いをしていますが、気温が高すぎるのでエアコンを使わないと熱中症になってしまうし、エアコンを使いすぎると電力が足りなくなるし、とても難しい問題です。夏になったらどうなってしまうんでしょうか。
The Kanto area is also very hot, and recently the news has been saying that there is a problem of not having enough electricity. On March 33, the supply and demand reached a critical point and an energy emergency was declared. The government asked people in Kanto and Tohoku to reduce their energy usage, but the temperature has been so high that without using air conditioners people will suffer heatstroke. As a result, everyone is using air conditioners and the energy continues to be insufficient, creating a terribly difficult problem. What is going to become of this summer??

５月は新緑が美しい季節です。苔の緑と森の緑に囲まれた素敵な神社の写真を撮りました。
この神社では毎年ゴールデンウィークに紙の神様のお祭りが行われます。
I took a photo of a beautiful shrine surrounded by gorgeous green moss and a forest. Every year there is a festival for the paper goddess during Golden Week.

新型コロナウイルスのために、去年もおととしもお祭りは行われませんでしたが、今年は静かにお祭りをしていたみたいです。金色の豪華なおみこしは飾ってあるだけでしたが、神様を乗せた木製の箱が乗った神輿は担がれていました。
Due to COVID19, they haven’t held this festival for two years, but they did a simplified version this year. They didn’t use the beautiful golden mikoshi and only used simple wooden mini box to carry the goddess this year.

２０２０年には色々な行事やパーティーができなくなりましたが、今年は少しずつ皆さんが楽しめる行事ができるようになったり、旅行に行けるようになるいいなと思います。
Since 2020, people have had to cancel many traditional events and parties. I hope people are able to start holding fun events and traveling again this year.

４月になるとたくさんの春の食べ物が出てきますね。レストランや居酒屋などで「春メニュー」が見られるようになります。一つの代表的な春の食べ物というと「タケノコ」です。
In April, all sorts of spring foods begin to appear. You can find “spring menus” at restaurants and bars. One of the most famous of these spring foods is takenoko (bamboo shoots).

タケノコは４月下旬に出てくる竹の芽です。竹は硬くて太いですが、タケノコは茹でると柔らかくて食べやすくなります。タケノコが良くとれる山では、毎年タケノコ堀りのイベントがありますから、家族などがタケノコ堀りに行くニュースを見ます。
Takenoko are young bamboo shoots that spround in April. Bamboo is hard and tough, so if you boil takenoko it becomes soft and easy to eat. In mountains where lots of bamboo plants grow there are annual takenoko digging events, and you can see families going into the mountains to dig up shoots on the news.

私はタケノコ狩りをしたことはないですが、土から出てきたばかりの小さなタケノコが美味しいそうです。タケノコは山でとってきた後にすぐに食べることもできるそうですが、一般的にはお湯でゆでて灰汁抜きをします。灰汁抜きをすると苦い味がなくなって食べやすくなります。
I’ve never gone takenoko hunting, but I think fresh bamboo shoots peeking up from the ground look delicious. Apparently you can eat fresh takenoko right after taking it out of the ground, but most people boil them to remove the bitterness. Removing the bitter flavor makes them much easier to eat.

２月２２日は、「に、に、に」と「２」の数字が並ぶので、「ニャン、ニャン、ニャン」に聞こえるので、「猫の日」になっているそうです。
In Japanese, the (“ni ni ni”) of Feburary 22 (2/22) sounds like the “nyan nyan nyan” sound that a cat makes, so the name “Cat Day” has become popular.

今年の猫の日は、２０２２年の２月２２日なので２が６つになってちょっと特別でした。日本では電車の駅で飼われている猫が「駅長」として活躍している場所がいくつかありますが、猫の日にはいろいろなグッズが売られたり、猫駅長が美味しいものをもらえたりしたようです。
This year’s Cat Day also took place in 2022, so there were a total of six “ni” sounds, making it a unique Cat Day. In Japan, several train stations gave local cats the honorary position of station master. Cat Day-themed goods were put on sale, and these cat station masters were given delicious gifts.

私の友人は猫が大好きなので猫駅長に会いに行ったことがありますが、また会いたいなあと言っていました。またいつかどこにでも旅行に行けることができるといいですね。
My friend who loves cats has visited one of these cat stations, and she says she wants to visit one again. It will be nice once we are able to free travel anywhere we like again.

今年はラニーニャ現象のために1月には大雪になると言われていたのですが、去年ほどの大雪にはなりませんでした。今年の雪は、普段は降らないような所での大雪だったようです。
This year, due to the la Niña effect, we were told that January would be extremely snowy. However, it wasn’t as snowy as last year. Instead, this year’s snow fell heavily on places that normally don’t get a lot of snow.

雪が降ると、雪かきをしたり屋根の雪を下ろしたり、運転が大変になったりして、大人はあまりうれしくないのですが、子供にとっては雪は楽しいものです。雪が降ったときにつくるものの一つに、「かまくら」があります。これは、大きな雪のかたまりに穴をあけて部屋を造ったもので、その中に入って遊んだりします。
When it snows, adults are not so happy because of shoveling snow, knocking snow off of the roofs, and because driving becomes difficult. Kids, on the other hand, are usually happy about snow. When it snows, one of the things kids like to build is a kamakura. A kamakura is a big pile of snow with a hole dug in it to form a hole. Kids climb inside and play.

かまくらの中は意外に温かかったりして、しばらく座っていても寒くなかった記憶があります。秋田ではかまくらをたくさん作って、中に毛布を引いてそこで餅を食べたりコンロで甘酒を温めてのんだりする行事があるそうです。横手市では、かまくらのなかに祭壇を作って、水神を祀ったりもするそうです。
The inside of a kamakura is warmer than the outside, and I remember sitting in one for a long time and still not feeling cold. In Akita Prefecture, they build lots of kamakura and place blankets inside them, then place stoves inside and heat up mochi and amazake to enjoy. I’ve heard that in Yokote City, they set up altars inside of kamakura to honor the water gods.

一つ一つのかまくらから暖かい光が出ていて、とても幻想的な景色だそうです。機会があれば一度見てみたいなと思います。
Each kamakura glows with the lights put inside, and it creates a fantastic spectacle. I’d love to have the chance to see that one day.
